FireFox 2.0 and the backspace on Linux

Originally published at Scott's blog. Please leave any comments there.

I know a lot of my linux friends hate the fact that FF made the back space “go up” instead in the new version of FF so I am here to tell you the people and persons behind this, Novel.

It seems that one lone FF developer by the name of Robert O’Callahan has taken it upon himself even when the majority have voted to revert this (0) to make it do absolutely nothing now. Robert O’Callahan was the person behind the change in the first place claiming that since GNOME, Novell has stake in that desktop, and the program called epiphany which is a GNOME hacked version of mozilla goes UP when you hit the backspace.

Now I’ll help you sort all this political crap out.

  • Robert O’Callahan is a Novel employee.
  • Novel has monetary stake in GNOME
  • Robert O’Callahan made the backspace go from “going back history” to “go up” as in the up key.
  • Robert O’Callahan is a GNOME developer which Linus has already called them “Nazi’s” for dictating what users will have. Robert O’Callahan is following that practise with FireFox.
  • Robert O’Callahan decided that the majority of the people that wanted the backspace to “go back in history” were wrong and going against the majory of the voters he commit a patch that will make it do nothing.

Now if you search with google about the Firefox backspace and linux you will find over 2,000 hits all complaining about it and how to manually fix it to go back in history.

However the GNOME nazi’s backed by Novel and headed by Robert O’Callahan said screw you. You have no idea what you want so we will do for you.

And because I am a strong supporter to have the backspace “go back in history” and me calling it like it is Robert O’Callahan and those spineless other developers banned me from bugzilla.mozilla.org for being uncivil. LOL Now isn’t that calling the kettle black….

This (0) is what I was banned for…

This is absolutely disgusting. We are fighting to get this bug reverted from (bug)#325541 and instead we get some developers that decide to take a different step to it and go from reverting it to a patch Robert O’Callahan commits that does NOTHING to revert the actual bug report here. _Idiot_ Then we got another developer, Steffen Wilberg, that says its fixed when it isn’t and then even changes the original bug summary to what Robert O’Callahan did.

Now I’m no rocket scientist but do I see a pattern here that when making a bug report or a revert of a change will be overturned if any developer doesn’t agree with it? And then they simply ignore us when we ask for a explanation.

Robert O’Callahan should be removed from access here and his patch removed from the SVN repo. Steffen Wilberg should have his access removed as well for his role.

Robert O’Callahan what gives you the right to change the aspect of this bug and turn it into your own version of what it should be?

Steffen Wilberg you must be stupid. I simply can’t see your reason on the actions of closing this bug when it has never been fixed.

How’s that for trying to get your critics silenced.

Bugzilla is not a message board, please be civil and not abusive, and focus on discussing the merits of a change, not attacking senior developers. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358764#c42 is not acceptable. please mail mconnor@mozilla.com if you want to discuss this rationally.

I did discuss the merit’s. They didn’t like them.
